Its funny to hear people proclaim "WoW clone" whenever standard MMO features are talked about in Guild Wars 2.

Newsflash, WoW hasn't done ANYTHING original for 4+ years it has been out.
Blizzard simply has the resources and money to absorb any feature a game has to stay on top.

Yup, it makes perfectly sense for Anet to make Guild Wars 2 into a WoW clone, seeing every other MMO trying to dethrone WoW having a hard time surviving nowadays.

(btw, that was sarcasm)

I have my sights set just as high as ArenaNet does. This is their chance to make an impact on the incredibly stale MMO industry. They have brought new ideas to the table before, I expect the sequel to do the same.

People fail to see that many world of warcraft players are following the brand name or playing a game their friends play or are fans of warcraft itself. "WoW" doesn't really offer much in original content and can be considered a everquest clone with more color. Also known as EQ for kids by many eq players.

I do like many aspects of world of warcraft and if it was free to play, I would give it a chance to surmaze and aprise me. I don't hate wow simply because its popular. Although I'm not a fan of mmo games in general because of these reasons.

1. its online only and when the servers are no longer maintained or shut down, you lose everything. There is no single player/harddrive/lan options.

2. The time investment required for those games is insane. I'm looking to enjoy my hobby of gaming, not take on a second job with no pay.

3. Most are pay to play and I do not believe its right to require people to rent gaming time after they purchase the game.

4. The community of MMO's is probably the second worst in the entire world, just behind FPS players who seem to be the most hostile and childish.

I hope guildwars 2 does things differently while including the more interesting aspects of MMO play. But as it is I may end up getting stormreach and sticking with gw1. It all depends on how gw2 is played.

I don't care about the content, I know it will be fun. But if its a pain to play (only able to use the keyboard to move) then I will have no problem skipping it.

Am I expecting too much from guildwars 2? Nope. Making it easy to play and fun to enjoy. Thats not asking a lot.

To OP: 'Maybe in GW2' doesn't mean 'GW2 will have it'. It means 'GW1 won't have it'.

As for me, I expect GW2 to be at least as good as other games I'm currently playing (GW1 is still included on that list). If it fails to deliver, *shrug*. It's not as if I have to donate a kidney to buy a box.

Also, the early specs we got (which I expect to have changed a LOT since that time) don't scream WoW-clone to me. If anything, they're more like CoH-clone. If true, I can live with that.

After thinking more, I have a more serious answer:

I think there are high expectations for GW2 because most people saw the potential in original GW for a truly unique MMORPG. It didn't quite turn out that way, as has been discussed in numerous threads, and I don't want to detail all of GWs shortcomings here.

I have high expectations for GW2, because I have high expectations of ArenaNet. I like their philosophy, even if that philosophy has gotten a bit tarnished as GW ran on (by their own admission).

That said, GW2 could be a colossal failure.

I see Guild Wars 2 going the way of Oblivion. Long on ambition during development, short on delivery because of time/money/technology constraints. Still a solid game, but stripped down in comparison to its predecessor.

And that's a big reason of why people have (or used to have) high expectations. Then we start getting some comments about things that will and won't make it to the game and some people starts losing its faith on what they think would be a really good game. (ie, removed click 2 move)

I for one, believe that the game will be released later than sooner, but eventually it will be out.
Dunno, maybe it will be launched when D3 does.

my worry is, that with this pressure from the GW community, ANet will cave and produce some lame WoW copy where the emphasis is on the grind, rather then the game, as opposed to sticking to their original GW concept, which, for me, is the best MMO around by miles.
Agreed. Hell, just about every bit of (admittedly sparse) information about GW2 since day one has suggested that's exactly the direction they're going in.

No monthly fee.

Bam. Who cares about anything else? GW2 will still sell big time for that alone.

Which is great for Anet. But the players aren't Anet. How many people who love Guild Wars are going to buy it, and then end up feeling the same as someone who bought Blood Omen 2 because Soul Reaver was just so freakin' awesome. The only reason I would NOT buy GW2 is if they do one of those damn "Get exclusive content for buying at Gamestop" garbage deals.

As for the talk about it never coming out... I prefer to look at it as ArenaNet adopting the George R. R. Martin philosophy of publishing.

Think you crossed the line into crazy there.....

Hmm, this is interesting:

http://www.guildwars.com/products/guildwars2/gw2faq/

Has this been updated recently?

"Guild Wars 2 will have the kind of extensive character advancement appropriate to a persistent world RPG. It is our priority to avoid forcing players into the grind-based gameplay that too often accompanies a high level cap."

Will Guild Wars 2 be solo-able?

"Yes. You will be able to advance your character to the maximum level without ever joining a group if you so desire. Most content will be designed in a solo-friendly way, though often with mechanisms for scaling up in difficulty when more players are involved. This will give players the option to experience the game whichever way they prefer.

At the same time, it is important for an MMO community to join together to overcome challenges. There will also be some areas in the game that require a coordinated group effort."

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, or missed it earlier, but it sounds like GW2 will have a definite level cap. News, or am I just slow?

The option to solo gets me interested as always. But when it comes to the level cap question? Of course there will be a level cap. If they don't install a level cap, then we will eventually achieve such a high level that gaining the needed xp for the next level will just be unrealistic.

Say the highest possible XP gain is 1,000,000 from a single kill. (work with me here) Now picture what kinds of experience requirement that would have to hit the next level. 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Without all the silly numbers, there will come a time when the XP gain won't be a benefit and it will become impossible to level up without grinding XP for a year straight for that next level and if they include XP penalties for dying (which I pray they don't!) then it will make it even harder.

If they have a XP death penatly that only removes 1% of the current XP, but you need 90 million xp to level and the strongest monsters only give 1 million xp... Well you see what I'm getting at. And thats a good ratio when many other mmo games (like fiesta) only give you like 7500xp at the higher tiers yet require around 3 million xp to level and the death penalty takes away something like 1%-5%-10%. Dying a lot can be catastrophic.

GW2 has such high expectations because they've had all this time to see their plans in reality and what does and doesn't work with GW1... if they just ignore what happened there and don't build upon anything they'll just have taken a huge step backwards and pissed everybody off. It's like in school: when you get to the end of a class and take the test, teachers want to see everybody do good, not GORED it up as if they paid 0 attention and didn't' give a damn.

I expect alot because of the lack of information we have received in regards to GW2. They are acting like its the ancient chinese secret. I'm sure that Arenanet will come through for the fans but its simply time to give up the goods.
